CHRISTMAS STORY

AN AIRPOD FOR SANTA...

As every one knows, Santa is very much concerned by the problems of pollution associated with transport.

The reindeer is know to emit CO2 (methane), which does not meet with his ecological feeling.

That's the reason why, like the leaders of major fleets, Santa went to MDI to replace his sleigh and his polluting reindeers by a clean AirPod.

AirPod

Santa is very professionnal:before he has visited before the assembly plant of the AirPod, and he tested the vehicle successfully. Then he said he was particularly interested by the Cargo capacity of airPod Cargo, which will enable him to carry lots of toys for our children.

He very much appreciated the handling of AirPod, even on snow, and its small footprint. He claimed that it will make it possible for him to get into all the cheminies, even the smallest, without getting out of his vehicle.

Although we can see the pictures, this story is a fiction, a festive comedy. Grumpy critics and opponents of all kinds, please, refrain from too easy negative comments, at reading this amusing tale, which serves no other purpose than to wish all of you: HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

Peter De Swert, Executive Vice President of KLM Engineering & Maintenance received the keys from the hands of Cyril NEGRE Vice President of MDI.
Two "AirPod" will perform tests for a minimum period of three months in the premises of KLM E & M. One of AirPod is adapted to transport parts and maintenance equipment at Schiphol-Center (Cargo version) and the other the transport of persons at Schiphol-Oost (People Version).

The purpose of the use of AirPod is to reduce CO2 emissions on a portion of the distribution chain for which KLM is currently using traditional cars and trucks that run on diesel.

From his side, Air France Industries is obliged to wait for the administrative processing and release of the official document for approval to begin testing our "AirPod".

Panic of traditional car lobby?

During the last week of November 2009, a study by the University of California at Berkeley concluded that compressed air vehicles from MDI were more expensive and more polluting than a conventional vehicle.

This study published by the Environmental Research Letters
(http://www.iop.org/EJ/abstract/1748-9326/4/4/044011/) contains errors so big that its purpose is not scientific but is an act of bashing, pure and simple.

Monday, November 23, 2009: The EPFL and the MDI signed a collaboration agreement.

“L'Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne” (EPFL) is an engineering school located in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was ranked 1st non American University (15th in the world) in the engineering, technology and computing area.

The Industrial Electronics Laboratory of EPFL has introduced energy storage as a topic of research for over a decade. In the context of sustainable development, energy storage by using the air compression is also part of research in this laboratory. The work on the MDI Air Car interests the Industrial Electronics Laboratory at the EPFL, a vehicle using compressed air being naturally a part of the LEI subjects, in terms of performance and production of air under high pressure.

Airpod

According to the LEI the compressed air engine offers numerous advantages:

·         The compressed air can be produced by using renewable energy.

·         The life cycle  is a lot better than all electrochimical technologies

·         No difficult materials to recycle

·         Easy to repair and maintain.

A collaboration agreement has been signed between the very prestigious school and MDI. This is a new recognition of the MDI works.

Tragedy strikes at MDI !

On Tuesday, 23rd June, on the eve of his tenth year of close collaboration with MDI, Sebastian Braud, was involved in a motorcycle accident and left us for ever. Since 1999 he had been very active in representing MDI in Spain where he had spent most of his life.
Last October, he joined the MDI Head Quarters at Carros, taking up the post as the Head of the Communications Department. His talent as the Webmaster turned out to be a stroke of luck for MDI and he arduously revamped the Corporate Website to the latest multi-platform standard.
Extremely active and always ready to take up any challenge, he organised and participated in many events of the Company such as the Geneva Motor Show and the Presentation of the AirPods at Dassault Industries.
Sebastian was a man of pleasant disposition, positive outlook and had a very friendly and likeable personality. The entire staff and the Directors of the Company are saddened by this sudden loss of a splendid person and join his family and friends in mourning their tragic bereavement. May he rest in peace.

Appraisal of the International Geneva Motor Show 2009

Two weeks after the Geneva Motor Show, it is now possible to analyse the event and make a proper evaluation of the impact of exposing the  MDI Technology to the public. Broadly speaking, the show was a resounding success.

  • An Appropriate Location and an Attractive Stand.            .

Although the MDI Stand was not accommodated within the “Green Flag” region of the Exhibition, the location was chosen carefully and the Stand was surrounded by the most prestigious Italian and German Companies. The MDI Stand crowned the section of the major brands making MDI a brand in the making. It is now a brand to reckon with, ready for global industrialisation. MDI’s positioning amongst the Big Manufacturers rather than amongst the Research Companies and University Laboratories was therefore of vital importance. Strategically located in the middle of the Hall number 5 and at the intersection of two alleyways gave MDI a great spotlight that it deserved.

The Stand was decorated in light wood and natural colours, echoing the clean and environmentally friendly MDI corporate philosophy for technical development of pollution free vehicles. MDI was the only Stand at the Exhibition without any carpeting or synthetic plastic in large quantities. This pertinent fact was diligently observed by Mr. Scheidegger M Henri, the Secretary General of Palexpo.  The MDI Stand was a small dew pond amidst a jungle of plastic and steel.

  • A Warm Reception from the General Public.

The International Motor Show in Geneva is a veritable decathlon. Ten hours, non-stop daily routine for ten days was quite a rigorous undertaking. Over this period, 800 brands were able to present their products to almost 700,000 visitors. The Exhibition Hall was an incessant swarm of masses, often from far-flung places, arriving by all possible means of transport. Despite the fact that all other stands were crowded, it was gratifying and exciting that those who visited MDI stand showed glint in their eyes, as if saying, “We've got our eyes on you".

Many visitors made very positive comments on MDI vehicles and their novel characteristics. Many came specially to place immediate orders and some even wanted to rent the cars. On the average, over 200 visitors per day expressed their desire to purchase the cars during the Exhibition. MDI Website www.mdi.lu is absolutely inundated with inquiries.

  • The Unexpected visit of Mr Ratan Tata

The day before the official opening of the Geneva Motor Show, MDI had an unexpected pleasure to welcome Mr Ratan Tata, the Chairman of Tata Group, accompanied by Mr Ravi Kant, the COO of Tata Motors. The two gentlemen, followed by a retinue of senior officials of the Indian Company, had a long chat on the AirPods and newly re-designed OneFlowAir car with President Negre. The retinue showed particular interest in the road range and self-sufficiency of this little urban marvel.

The mutual respect that exists between the two Presidents was quite evident when Mr. Negre and Mr. Tata concluded this informal meeting by discussing the current developments taking place at MDI. The visit of the President of the fifth largest manufacturer of the commercial vehicles in the world is always regarded as a mark of great esteem.

  • The other Exhibitors Visiting the MDI Stand.

Among the steady stream of anonymous visitors, a few notable personalities emerged. The Designer of the famous Austrian motorcycles and light vehicles, the Marketing Team of the famous Italian Company whose booth was adorned with a pretty floral cage, the Technology Development Manager in Asia of the prestigious English Company, and  the CEO of  Electric Vehicles of the major French Company were just a few of the prominent exhibitors visiting MDI Stand.

The other significant visit was that of His Excellency Mr. Hans-Rudolf  Merz, the President of the Swiss Confederation, who dropped in for a few minutes to discuss the benefits of the AirPods with President Negre.

Mainly, the visitors acclaimed the importance and relevance of this new MDI Technology in view of current geopolitical global crisis.  Some of the comments were very gratifying; but then there was also a small minority who was so sceptical about the technology of the MDI vehicles that they were simply incredulous that air can drive an engine to run a car.

  • Presence of the Media.

The first two days were the preserve of the journalists. News of development of new technologies on the stands of the major manufacturers was very rare at the exhibition. However, the journalists   notched up quite a triumph when they stumbled upon Compressed Air Technology at the MDI Stand. The two vehicles attracted the attention of several hundred international press agents who made a dash for the AirPod and the OneFlowAir.

The credit goes to the hard work and impartial professionalism of Mr. Eric Bergerolle from Nouvel Observateur (See his article below), and that of the television reporter Mr. David Sandon from France 3, National Edition and Publication of Nice, as well as to Mr. Zian Marro from Swiss Television. Many foreign television channels from China, Greece, Japan, Romania, Russia and the UK caught up with the new technology and so did a few of the Radio channels such as RMC (Veronique Verdin) and Europe 1.

The news on the internet was buzzing as well. Euronews and Caradisiac contributed excellent articles. The most remarkable article was "A Special" in the United Nation’s “The Magazine”. News agencies also did a great job, particularly the article entitled "French firm all air-powered car at Geneva show” in the Associated Press, by the prestigious American Economic Review, The Forbes.

A Children's Book depicts the Compressed Air Car

The facts about Compressed Air Technology have now even reached the young children through a book by Mr. Jean-Marie Defossez, in which he regales the advent of the novel MDI vehicles. The book, "From the Air for the Planet" is an episode of the adventures of "Sauvenature" kind of characters who assist the children to discover pollution free vehicles while raising awareness about environmental protection. This book about the protection of nature has been translated into four languages and is currently the subject of adaptation of a cartoon on France 3. The book is published by Flammarion and can be bought from major Internet sites.

Figures

Two months after the launch of MDI’s new website, its popularity has become quite apparent. Thousands of surfers visit these pages every day. However, the number of people completing the “Intention to Purchase” form has yielded a significant result for MDI. The surfers are requested to indicate their preferences to particular types of vehicles and express their intention to purchase the vehicles when the production commences without any commitment on their part or without leaving a deposit. The table below shows the analysis of the figures in the past two months only, indicating the popularity of MDI Vehicles even before their availability in the market.

Analysis of “Intention to Purchase” forms on the MDI Website From 9th October 2008 to 8th December 2008
Type Quantity Percentage
OneFlowAir 4,386 40.92%
CityFlowAir 4,142 38.65%
MiniFlowAir 1,113 10.38%
AIRPod 587 5.48%
MultiFlowAir 271 2.53%
Others 219 2.04%
  10,718 100%

These statistics indicate that the appropriate decision was made this year in respect of the order in which the vehicles are going to be manufactured (AIRPod, OneFlowAir, CityFlowAir and MiniFlowAir). Although these figures only show private individuals’ purchasing intentions from only the French website, the OneFlowAir is at the top of the list. The AIRPod, a vehicle more suitable for fleets rather than for individuals, also turned out to be very popular although it’s real potential is more for the municipalities and large organisations. The CityFlowAir, which will be the third MDI vehicle to go into production, represents about 40% of the purchasing intentions. These figures reflect MDI’s assessment of plant sizes and markets.

MDI in negotiation with the Iguazu Park

MDI was contacted by the Management of the Iguazu Park in Argentina. This extremely picturesque Park, with more than 67,000 hectares and 2,500 indigenous spices (some unique only to Iguazu), is now classified as “Patrimoine Naturel de l’Humanite”. It is situated on the boundary between Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. More than a million visit the park every year and they have to be transported through the jungle to observe the majesty of the place.

The Management’s request was for a proposal for an alternative transport system that would be more ecologically acceptable than their current polluting system. The long term aim is to build a fleet of vehicles but for an immediate solution, the re-motorisation of their existing small trains has been proposed. These trains, which carry the visitors, require about a hundred horse powers. MDI Technology is very versatile and has the advantage of being adapted according to the required power output and is planning to install several MDI Engines in the trains.

In December, the Company that operates the Park and MDI will open up discussions on the methodology of implementation of MDI’s Proposal which will result in a fully-fledged impact on environment protection in the heart of a subtropical forest.

Members of the “Air Car Forum” visit the MDI’s Head Quarters

Aficionados of MDI known as the “Air Car Forum” visited the Carros Factory on Monday October 27th 2009. The group of fifteen members operate a web page on which people can discuss MDI’s ongoing activities. Their Forum is completely independent but genuinely illustrates people’s opinions and questions about MDI Technology and the latest news on development. MDI Directors and Staff were, therefore, very pleased to meet the members of the Forum once again. “The Air Car Forum”  has now been operating for several years and MDI has had the opportunity to meet the team during a previous visit in 2003.

On this occasion, the fifteen members came with a view to get to know the latest development in MDI Technology. They were received by Mr Cyril Negre, the Head Engineer, who eventually thanked them all for their support. After being updated on the state of the technology, the visitors observed an engine being tested on the Test Bench. This was followed by a question and answer session and the visit culminated with the Presentation on the AIRPod which was a way to thank the team for their friendly support.

Air France flies with MDI

Last week MDI’s team visited the group’s headquarters near Le Bourget with two AirPods. The extensive demonstration was a resounding success and Air France Directors made their decision.

A press release published on Air France’s official website announced its verdict to replace their petrol/diesel driven vehicles with zero-emission compressed-air powered vehicles at Airports to fulfil their commitment to further reduce the environmental impact of its activity on the environment.

Air France & KLM are now in the process of testing the zero-emission Transporters for six months and subsequently intend to equip their airports with AirPods.

Air France's pronouncement to select MDI Technology to clean up the environment at the Airports is yet the highest accolade received by MDI in the West.  Air France's acceptance of Compressed Air Technology to further reduce the pollution levels at the Airports is the second major endorsement of MDI Technology, Tata Motors being the first one.

Tata Motors’ recognition of this innovative 21st Century Clean Air Technology initiated the launch pad sequence for MDI Cars and with Air France & KLM now responding positively and placing orders for a fleet of AirPods for equipping their Airports, MDI Technology has been catapulted into a trajectory destined to meteoric  heights.

The Mayor of Nice lends a hand to launch MDI’s Urban Transport Solution: The AirPod

Mr Christian Estrozi, the Mayor of Nice, on this auspicious occasion of the launch of the AirPod, signed an agreement with MDI, to embark on equipping the Town of Nice with these eco-friendly vehicles and declared his support for the Ecological Projects launched by “The General Council of the Alpes Maritime”. The Agreement involves setting up of a Fleet of MDI Vehicles for the Town of Nice.

A four-seater vehicle with a Video screen for retro vision, Zero Emission, two meters in length and costing only € 6,000,  the AirPod is, without a doubt, a phenomenal solution for the polluted big cities.

The AirPod was conceptualised by MDI:
  • In response to the need of the City of Paris to establish the “Autolib Project” (a self-service car rental concept),
  • To Provide a solution to Urban Pollution,
  • To Improve Urban Mobility (to prevent traffic jams and to facilitate better parking pattern),
  • To re-define the concept of “The Automobile and Transportation”.

More than 350 people consisting of Politicians, Journalists, Investors and Enthusiasts of Zero Pollution Technology turned up for the launch of the AirPod at the MDI’s Research and Development Centre near Nice. This day will be remembered for the inauguration of the new “Automobile Concept” that challenges all the current standards, and promises to be the alternative for the urban traffic issues, auguring a pollution free epoch.

With its small size, its low price, zero emission, its pleasant and futuristic design, the AirPod is a corner stone in the development of the urban vehicles. It is driven with a joystick and costs merely € 1 for driving a distance of 200 Km, making one forget the worries about the price of petrol. The AirPod, with its rounded shape, has an enormous interior space, moves smoothly through the traffic and because of its small size is a child's play to park. There are two versions of the AirPod:

Three to Four-seater for the transport of passengers;
With a single seat for the driver a large trunk for the transport of parcels and small deliveries.

The event culminated in demonstrations of two working models of the AirPods, which attracted the attention of many investors. The Manufacturing License for the AirPods is incorporated within the License for (less than 500 Kg MDI License) the OneFlowAir cars and will be manufactured in the same factory as per original MDI Concept. A small pilot batch is already in production and the full production is envisaged to start in the spring of 2009.

MDI now intends to bid for the “Autolib” concept of the City of Paris. This is the “vehicular” version of the well-known “Velib” programme that has already changed the Parisians’ habits.

The President of the General Council of “The Alpes Maritime” and the Mayor of Nice, Mr Christian Estrozi, proclaimed his unswerving and staunch support for MDI’s Zero Pollution Vehicles. During his speech at the launching of the AirPod, the Mayor dedicated himself to complement his other ecology projects with MDI’s Compressed Air Technology.

The Mayor’s commitment to various Ecological Projects is well-known to all and this proclamation of his demonstrated how important MDI Technology is to this region of the Cote d’Azure.  As a general councillor, he expressed the willingness of the politicians to co-operate with the French Companies that are providing the real alternatives to current pollution problems. He lamented that France had taken a second place to India in a Project of this National importance, and hastened to add that should the City of Paris not be in a position to proceed with its “Autolib” Project, Nice will step into the breach and succeed in becoming the first Town Council  in France to inaugurate the programme using MDI Vehicles.

The guests, the MDI Directors and the Staff applauded his direct and unambiguous remarks and his determination to introduce Pollution Free Environment in Nice was reported in various National newspapers.

Mr Guy Negre on an official visit to New Delhi by an invitation from the Ministry of International Commercial Affairs

The state secretary in charge of International commercial affairs, Mrs. Anne-Marie Idrac, has solicited the presence of Mr. Nègre for a visit in India on September 16th and 17th 2008.
The aim of the visit was to reinforce the relationship between the two countries and was a continuity to the Official visit of the French president last January.

The state secretary being aware of the agreement of our company with TATA Motors, it was natural for MDI to appear as an ecological representative of the delegation. TATA Motors is the world’s fifth car manufacturer, but it is also in most major economic activities: aerospace, commerce, defense, insurance, agriculture … its association with MDI demonstrates the importance of the compressed air technology for that large Indian company. During this visit Mrs. Anne-Marie Idrac and Mr. Guy Nègre met with Mr. Sharad Pawar, Minister of Agriculture and Mr. Vilas Buburao Muttenwar, renewable energies Minister. Among the French industrials present: Mr. Christian Duhain (EADS), Mr. Barry Howe (Alstom), Mr.  Bertrand Durrande (Areva) and Mr. Paul Queveau (Heuliez)...

A new Brand Name for MDI Products

As a result of a request from “Caterpillar”, MDI was compelled to cease the usage of the word “CATs” to designate the vehicles operating with Compressed Air Technology System.

The abbreviation “CATS” is being used by Caterpillar for its machines and for internet domains. It was in fact this situation that delayed the setting up of the New MDI Website. The search for a new name has been a complex and demanding task but after a prolonged consideration the word “FlowAIR” has been selected to identify the MDI Technology. Henceforth, “FlowAIR” will replace the acronym “CATs”.

Apart from its literal meaning, “FlowAIR” is also a French pun for “flower”, evocative of both the ecological mind set as well as the logo of the Company.  The vehicle names will now be suffixed with “FlowAIR”, thus:

OneFlowAIR,  MiniFlowAIR,  CityFlowAIR, MultiFlowAIR.
